GROWTH PERFORMANCE AND HEMATOGICAL PARAMETERS OF CHICKEN OFFERED ORAL ADMINISTRATION OF SOLE AQUEOUS LEAF EXTRACTS OF SCENT LEAF AND SIDA ACUTA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study aimed to determine the proximate composition of Ocimum gratissimum (scent leaf), Sida acuta, and impact of their aqueous leaf extracts on the growth performance of broiler. Two hundred and ten (210) unsexed commercial day-old broiler chicks were purchased from a reputable commercial Hatchery. The birds were randomly divided into five (5) treatment groups of three (3) replicates each. A replicate contained 14 birds in each replicate. Feed and water were supplied ad libitum to the birds. All the necessary vaccination were administered appropriately as at when due. Fresh scent leaves were air dried for few days and sun dried for 1 hour. Sida acuta leaves were sun dried for 2 hours daily for 5 days. The leaves were pulverized to coarse powder with an electric blender. Sida acuta leaf powder (100g) was soaked in 1L distilled water. After homogenization of the mixture of the leaves with distilled water, it was left for 18 hours. Thereafter, it was sieved with mucilin cloth to obtain the aqueous leaf extracts. A corn soybean based on diet was offered as the based diet of the study. Oral administration of antibiotics (Gali Fura Care Plus®) and coccidiostat (Q-Cox®) were given to the birds in the control. Other experimental birds were offered aqueous leaf extracts of S. acuta and scent leaf in the drinking water. Broiler that were offered aqueous leaf extract of 40 and 80ml/L scent leaf in drinking water were in T1 and T2, respectively. Oral administration of aqueous of Sida acuta at 30ml/L and 60ml/L were given to birds in treatment T3 and T4, respectively. The extracts were used as alternative to drugs (antibiotics and coccidiostat) used in the control. Results showed that the crude protein of Sida acuta leaf content was slightly higher (21.44%) than that of Sida acuta leaf (18.52%). Scent leaf had higher crude fibre (17.60%) and 13.10% ash content than that of Sida acuta leaf (14.43% and 10.20%).
