Abstract

ABSTRACT A total of 10 Sahel goats were randomly divided into two groups of 5 animals each. Group A underwent laparotomy and muscle suturing with Polyglactin 910, while Group B received Piliostigma reticulatum sutures. Physiological parameters, including rectal temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and physical status, were monitored at regular intervals postoperatively. Both groups exhibited significant increases in rectal temperature and heart rate following surgery, with peak values of 40.2 ± 0.5°C and 120 ± 10 beats/min, respectively, observed at 24 hours postoperatively. These parameters gradually returned to baseline levels over time. However, no significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of these physiological responses. The physical status of both groups deteriorated postoperatively, as evidenced by reduced appetite, lethargy, and decreased activity levels. A significant decrease in feed intake was observed in both groups during the first 48 hours postoperatively, with Group B showing a slightly more pronounced reduction. However, no significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of overall physical recovery. While both suture materials induced similar physiological responses, the long-term effects of Piliostigma reticulatum on wound healing and animal welfare require further investigation. Future studies should consider a larger sample size, longer follow-up periods, and a more detailed evaluation of wound healing parameters to provide more definitive conclusions. Additionally, exploring the potential antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of Piliostigma reticulatum could offer valuable insights into its potential benefits in veterinary medicine. In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the physiological responses of Sahel goats to laparotomy and the potential impact of suture material choice. While both Polyglactin 910 and Piliostigma reticulatum induced similar stress responses, further research is needed to fully assess their comparative efficacy in promoting wound healing and minimizing postoperative complications.
