Abstract

ABSTRACT The effects of mining activities on agricultural land and food security are a growing concern worldwide, as the increasing demand for mineral resources leads to expansion of mining operations into fertile agricultural lands. This study investigates the impacts of mining on agricultural productivity, food availability, and livelihoods of rural communities in Vwang mining affected regions. The purpose of this study is to access the effects of mining on agricultural land use, crop yields, and food security, and to identify strategies for mitigating these impacts. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining field observations, household surveys to collect data on agricultural productivity, soil quality, water availability, and household food security. The results show significant declines in agricultural productivity, crop yields, and food availability in areas surrounding mining operations, with soil pollution, and land degradation identified as primary factors contributing to these declines. The study also reveals significant impacts on rural livelihoods, including loss of income, reduced access to food, and increased poverty. The conclusion reached in this study highlight the urgent need for sustainable mining practices, environmental rehabilitation, and support for affected communities to mitigate the impacts of mining on agricultural land and food security. The findings of this study contribute to the understanding of mining effects on agricultural land and food security, and inform policies and practices to minimize these impacts and ensure sustainable development. KEY WORDS: Mining activities, Food Security, Agricultural Land, mine ponds, Land degradation
