Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigated audience perception of social media memes as a source of happiness and relaxation among users in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State. The research aimed to understand the prevalence, consumption patterns, and perceived impact of memes on users' emotional states within this geographic context. A diverse demographic of social media users, encompassing various age groups, genders, socio-economic statuses, and cultural affiliations, was targeted. The literature review highlighted the role of social media memes in Nigeria, emphasizing their influence on users' emotional well-being. Memes served as tools for emotional expression and social interaction, fostering community bonding. However, challenges such as misinformation and online harassment were also noted. Data collection was conducted using a survey method, revealing insights influenced by demographic factors. Findings indicated that memes significantly shaped social media interactions and cultural trends. While memes provided emotional relief and strengthened social connections, excessive exposure raised concerns about productivity and the normalization of harmful stereotypes. The study concluded that while memes can enhance emotional well-being, they also pose risks that necessitate management. Recommendations included educational initiatives to combat misinformation and the integration of meme culture into marketing strategies to foster positive engagement while mitigating potential distractions.
