A PROJECT ON STUDENT/LECTURER RELATIONSHIP
Abstract
This study investigated the nature and dynamics of lecturer–student relationships at Bayero University, Kano. The research aimed to examine the nature of these relationships, identify the factors influencing them, analyze their consequences, and explore measures adopted by the university management to enhance such interactions. A comprehensive review of related literature was conducted, covering key concepts, the nature and determinants of lecturer–student relationships, their outcomes, and improvement strategies. The study was anchored on attachment theory and the functionalist perspective.
A quantitative research design was employed, with data collected from a sample of 120 respondents drawn from the Faculty of Social Sciences using simple random sampling. Data collection and analysis methods were systematically applied to address the research questions.
Findings from the study highlighted that lecturer–student relationships play a significant role in shaping students’ academic experiences and outcomes. Various factors, including communication patterns, institutional policies, and individual attitudes, were found to influence these relationships. The study also revealed both positive and negative consequences arising from the quality of interactions between lecturers and students. Furthermore, measures implemented by the university management were identified as crucial in fostering a more supportive academic environment.
The study concludes that strengthening lecturer–student relationships is essential for improving academic performance and overall institutional effectiveness, and recommends continuous efforts by university authorities to promote healthy and productive interactions.
