Abstract

This study evaluates the impact of the Ibrahim Babangida Market on the urbanization of Suleja town from 1991 to 2021. The market, named after Nigeria's former military leader, was established to stimulate economic growth and urban development in Suleja. Using a mixed-method approach, the research examines how the market has influenced population growth, infrastructure expansion, commercial activities, and socio-economic transformation in the area. Primary data was collected through surveys and interviews with traders, residents, and government officials, while secondary data was obtained from archival records, government reports, and scholarly publications. Findings indicate that the Ibrahim Babangida Market has significantly contributed to Suleja's urbanization by attracting businesses, migrants, and investments, leading to increased economic activity and infrastructural development. However, challenges such as inadequate urban planning, traffic congestion, and environmental degradation have emerged due to rapid urbanization. The study concludes that while the market has been a catalyst for urban growth, sustainable planning and policy interventions are needed to address associated challenges. Recommendations include improved urban management, enhanced infrastructure, and stakeholder collaboration to ensure balanced development. This research provides insights into the role of markets in urbanization and offers guidance for policymakers in managing urban growth in emerging Nigerian cities.
