ASSESSMENT OF LOGISTICS OF A CONGESTION CONSTRUCTION SITES ON A PROJECT DELIVERY IN LAGOS STATE

The rapid urbanization and construction boom in Lagos, Nigeria, have led to increasingly congested construction sites, posing significant challenges to project logistics and delivery. This study aim to assess the logistics of congested construction sites in Lagos. The research focuses on three primary objectives: examining the characteristics of construction site congestion, developing a congestion index for materials storage based on the site project, and evaluating the factors affecting logistics in congested construction sites. The descriptive research method was adopted where qualitative data were collected with the use of questionnaire and physical site measurement. The use of percentage, Mean Item Score (MIS) and Non – Building Coverage Ratio (NBCR) were employed for the data analysis. Finding from the study revealed that the most important characteristic of the construction site congestion are large scale project causing work operation to occur at the same time and Excessive resources movement at construction site such as the excessive movement of plant, materials and labour in a narrow place were identified as important parts congestion characteristics (MIS = 3.56) with the overall average (Average MIS = 3.47). The result of the site survey has revealed that there are two sites with high level of congestion with range of less than 0.5. The most significant factor affecting logistics in a congested construction site are difficult to coordinate the movement of contractor’s materials on site, Close proximity of personnel to large stockpile of material on site and difficult to accommodate the safe storage and removal of materials waste on site were identified as significant parts congested logistics factors (MIS 3.77) with the overall average (Average MIS = 3.66). The study concluded that the level of logistics of a congestion construction site on a project delivery in Lagos is low. However, it was recommended to provide a forum or working group within the Lagos construction industry to share experience and solutions related to site congestion and logistics management and Implement a system for regular review and update of logistics strategies based on the congestion index and ongoing assessment of site characteristics.
