EFFECT OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF TALINUM TRIANGULARÉ (WATER LEAF) ON CISPLATIN-INDUCED FRONTAL CORTEX DAMAGE IN ADULT FEMALE WISTAR RATS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Although frequently used in cancer treatment, the powerful chemotherapeutic medication cisplatin has serious neurotoxic side effects that mostly affect the frontal cortex. Oxidative stress, which causes neuronal damage and cognitive deficits, is the main cause of neurotoxicity (Sacred et al., 2008). Researchers have been looking into natural substances that have antioxidant qualities to potentially offset these impacts in order to solve this. Talinum triangularé is a plant that is well-known for its therapeutic qualities, especially its neuroprotective and antioxidant capabilities (Newairy et al., 2024).
The ethanolic extract of Talinum triangularé (EETT) was evaluated for potential preventive benefits. A control group, a group receiving cisplatin (1ml), a group receiving EETT treatment (200 mg/kg), and a group receiving both cisplatin and EETT treatment were the four groups into which the rats were split. Oral EETT was given over a period of 14 days, whilst intraperitoneal administration of cisplatin was implemented. Histological investigation showed reduced neuronal loss. In summary, the study highlights that Talinum triangularé effectively reduces cisplatin-induced oxidative stress and neuronal damage in the frontal cortex, improving both biochemical and neurobehavioral outcomes in Wistar rats.
The results of the histological analysis indicated that the photomicrograph of GROUPS A, B, C, D shows normal neuronal cells (blue arrow), with capillaries that appear normal (red arrow), and the stroma also shows no abnormalities (slender arrow) (Kumar et al., 2020). But the histological analysis of GROUP E shows that the neuronal cells remain normal (blue arrow), but the capillaries show slight abnormalities (red arrow), and the stroma appears slightly abnormal (slender arrow), suggesting mild changes or damage. (Young et al., 2020).
