Abstract

This study examines the participation of women in Nigerian politics and analyzes its implications for the country’s overall political development. Despite comprising nearly half of the population, Nigerian women remain significantly underrepresented in elective and appointive political positions due to entrenched socio-cultural norms, economic barriers, party structures, and institutional discrimination. The study highlights how limited female political participation weakens democratic consolidation by restricting inclusiveness, reducing policy diversity, and limiting the representation of gender-specific interests within governance. Conversely, evidence shows that increased women’s participation fosters improved policy outcomes in areas such as education, health, social welfare, and human rights, while also strengthening accountability, transparency, and conflict management within political institutions. The research underscores that gender-balanced political structures are essential for sustainable national development. It concludes that promoting women’s political empowerment through legal reforms, gender quotas, capacity-building initiatives, and public enlightenment is crucial to achieving a more inclusive and mature democratic system in Nigeria.
