EVALUATION OF EFFECTS OF ALCOHOLIC EXTRACT OF IPOMOEA BATATAS LEAF ON ETHANOL INDUCED HEPATIC DAMAGE IN FEMALE WISTER RAT
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Ipomoea batatas extracts have demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. This study investigated the effect of alcoholic extract of ipomoea batatas leaf on alcohol induced liver damage in female Wistar rat.
Twenty female Wister rats weighing about 120gramms were used for the study. Animal were picked randomly and grouped into four groups (A, B, C and D) containing of five animals each. Group A (control) was given rat feed and water ad libitum as applicable to other groups. Group B was given 100mg/kg per body weight alcoholic extract of ipomoea batatas leaf orally for two weeks. Group C received 4mls/kg per body weight of 50% Ethanol orally for two weeks while Group D received co-administration of 4mls/kg body weight of 50% ethanol and 100mg/kg per body weight of alcoholic extract of ipomoea batatas leaf orally for two weeks. The experimental animals were weighed weekly and the results were analysed using One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Animals were sacrificed by cervical dislocation and liver were identified, harvested and preserved with 10% formosaline for histological study using Haematoxylin and Eosin stain.
The result showed that the increase observed in the body weight across the groups were not statistically significant (P
