Abstract

ABSTRACT This project focuses on the design, fabrication, and testing of a pneumatic bending machine capable of bending mild steel rods into precise angles of 45°, 60°, and 90°. In various structural applications, including aerospace, automotive, and construction, the ability to bend metal rods accurately is essential for ensuring functionality. Key objectives include calculating the necessary force and air pressure for bending operations and evaluating the machine's performance with rods of 8mm and 12mm. The bending process is powered by a pneumatic system that provides the necessary force up to 251.3 N for the 8mm rod and 848.23N for the 12mm rod. The pressure required by the pneumatic cylinder to bend the 8mm rod was 1.28 bar and 4.327 bar for 12mm rod. The selected compressor was capable of supplying pressure ranging from 6 bars to 12 bars. The primary aim of this study is to create a pneumatic bending machine that accommodates rods of varying diameters while ensuring ease of operation for users without technical expertise. The CAD design was presented in the appendix. The total material cost was N256,800. The research methodology involves designing the machine and fabricating the components. Results indicate that the pneumatic bending machine successfully achieves the desired bending angles with high accuracy and minimal human intervention.
