Abstract

ABSTRACT The laboratory experiment was carried out in the Research Laboratory of the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Maiduguri on the oviposition and development of Tribolium castaneum in bambara and cassava flour using different sex ratios (2 males:4 females and 2 males:2 females). Three (3) petri dishes were used for the experiment, each containing 20g of bambara and cassava flour with 2 different sex ratios (2 males:4 females and 2 males:2 females). The 2 different sex ratios of Tribolium castaneum were introduced into the centre of the petri dishes and allowed to oviposit in the flours for one (1) week. The setups were laid out in Randomised Complete Block Design and replicate three (3) times for each flour type and sex ratios. Data were taken on the number of larvae, pupae and adult that emerged in each flour with different sex ratio. The result from the study indicates that more larvae was obtained in Bambara flour, as compared to cassava and also more larvae was observed in the flour with sex ratios 2 males:4 females, as compared to the flour with sex ratios 2 males:2 females. The result clearly shows that sex ratios affects the oviposition and development of Tribolium castaneum and the flour also affects the oviposition and development of Tribolium castaneum
