INVESTIGATING THE PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT OF WORK-RELATED STRESS ON CONSTRUCTION WORKERS HEALTH IN ABUJA

This research project investigates the psychological impact of work-related stress on construction workers' health in Abuja, Nigeria. The study explores the factors contributing to occupational stress, its manifestation in terms of psychological symptoms such as anxiety and depression, and the broader implications for health and safety in the construction industry. To achieve the aim, this study undertook a quantitative research approach with the use of structured questionnaire administered on 88 randomly selected professionals of construction companies/firms registered with Federation of Construction Industry (FOCI) with Abuja’s business address. Out of the total number of questionnaires administered, 52 copies retrieved, giving a high response rate of 60%. The study used Mean Item Score (MIS) to analyse the data collected. Results of data analysis revealed that the most severe factors that contribute to work related stress on construction workers health is long working hours (MIS= 4.29),most severe psychological manifestations of Work-Related Stress on construction workers health is Anxiety (MIS= 3.98), most agreed Consequences and Implications of Work-Related Stress on construction workers health is Decreased job performance (MIS= 4.31), it revealed significant correlations between work-related stress and adverse psychological outcomes among workers, the most effective Strategy and Intervention for Stress Management on Construction Workers Health is improved communication (MIS= 4.63). The findings underscore the necessity for effective stress management interventions tailored to the construction industry in Abuja, with recommendations for improving mental health support systems to enhance overall workforce well-being and productivity.
