INSECURITY AND MORAL VALUES IN HIGHER INSTITUTIONS OF LEARNING: A STUDY OF ADAMAWA STATE UNIVERSITY, MUBI

This study titled Insecurity and Moral Values in Higher Institutions of Learning: A Study of Adamawa State University, Mubi examined the extent to which insecurity affects the moral standards, academic environment, and overall student behavior within the university community. The study adopted a survey research design, utilizing structured questionnaires administered to a sample of students, academic staff, and non-academic staff to gather relevant data. Findings revealed that insecurity in the form of cultism, theft, harassment, and the wider threat of insurgency in Mubi has negatively influenced moral values, leading to a decline in discipline, respect for authority, and ethical conduct among students. The study further discovered that insecurity not only disrupts academic activities but also promotes fear, erodes social cohesion, and weakens institutional mechanisms for moral upbringing. It concluded that moral decadence in the university is strongly linked to persistent insecurity, creating an environment that hinders effective learning and character development. The study recommended that university management and government authorities should strengthen security measures within and around the campus, intensify moral and civic education, encourage mentorship programs to guide students towards positive values, and collaborate with community stakeholders to ensure a safe and morally upright academic environment.
