EFFECT OF URBAN EXPANSION IN MARARABA MUBI HONG LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ADAMAWA STATE IN 2000,2010 AND 2020 USING GIS AND REMOTE SENSING
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The topic of this study revolves around the examination of urban expansion in Mararaba Mubi,
Nigeria, utilizing Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing techniques, spanning from 2000 to 2020. The primary objectives encompass the investigation of spatial patterns, the
analysis of the rate of expansion, identification of underlying driving factors, assessment of impacts, and the proposition of recommendations for sustainable urban development. In terms of
methodology, a mixed-method approach is adopted, incorporating both primary and secondary data sources. Primary data collection encompasses the utilization of GIS, remote sensing, and field
surveys through questionnaires. Secondary data sources consist of journals, articles, and publicly
available data. GIS and remote sensing play a pivotal role in mapping spatial patterns and expansion
rates, while statistical analysis and mapping techniques facilitate the discovery of key findings. The
findings are delineated shows the study area has experienced significant urban expansion, with the
most pronounced growth occurring between 2010 and 2020, constituting approximately 25% of the
study's focus. Result shows that the primary drivers behind urban expansion encompass population
growth, economic opportunities, infrastructure development, government policies, and proximity to
other urban centers, collectively making up another 25% of the study's insights. Urban expansion has resulted in both positive and negative consequences. Positive impacts, such as improved
infrastructure and heightened job opportunities, account for roughly 15% of the study's core findings. Conversely, negative effects, including environmental degradation and challenges related to housing affordability, comprise 10% of the study's insights. Findings shows stressing challenges
identified in the study, including the need for infrastructure development, environmental
preservation, affordable housing solutions, and the provision of essential social services, represent
another 10% of the study's insights. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the study area
should adopts integrated urban planning, prioritizes infrastructure development, addresses environmental concerns, ensures equitable access to social services, engages residents in decision-
making, mandates environmental impact assessments, encourages economic diversification, fosters regional collaboration, and develops a comprehensive urban development plan for a sustainable
and prosperous future.
