ABSTRACT
This study discusses “the role of local government on rural development in Girei Local Government Area of Adamawa State”. The objective of the study is to assess activities of Girei local government in performing its role as an instrument of rural community development. The research design used is the survey research method, the population of the study was derived from Girei Local Government Area of Adamawa State. Both primary and secondary data were used in collecting information and canalized using simple percentage. The findings reveal that, shortage of trained and experienced personnel affects the efficiency of local government administration, and political interference as well as bribery and corruption interfered with the activities of local government development. The study therefore recommend that the Local Governments should be encourage in harnessing more of their local financial sources, if they must leave up to their billing, instead of over dependence on the central government for fund as well as the State Government should be more aware of its responsibility by prompt payment of its share of revenue to local government and the Federal Government should see to it that no State Government fails to contribute its share by deducting from its internally generated revenue to the Local Governments.
