Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the yield response of Agaricus bisporus mushrooms cultivated on alternative substrates, specifically groundnut straw and waste cabbage leaves, in an effort to evaluate sustainable, cost-effective options for mushroom production. Traditional mushroom cultivation often relies on expensive and resource-intensive substrates, creating an opportunity to explore the potential of agricultural by-products as viable alternatives. The study’s objectives were to assess the growth rates and development of Agaricus bisporus on these substrates and to measure and compare the yield in terms of quantity and quality. Materials and methods involved cultivating Agaricus bisporus on substrates of groundnut straw and waste cabbage leaves under controlled conditions, monitoring factors such as height, weight, pinhead formation, and maturity period. The results indicated that both alternative substrates supported effective mushroom growth, with waste cabbage leaves producing taller, heavier mushrooms, while groundnut straw facilitated higher pinhead formation rates. The groundnut straw and waste cabbage leaves were found to be effective, sustainable substrates for mushroom cultivation, presenting an affordable, eco-friendly option for farmers. Recommendations include exploring nutrient enhancements for these substrates, conducting further research into their long-term impacts on mushroom quality, and encouraging policy support for agricultural waste use in mushroom farming. This study contributes to sustainable agricultural practices by promoting resource recycling and providing accessible methods for mushroom growers.
