INFLUENCE OF PEER GROUP ON STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT: A CASE STUDY OF FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC MUBI, ADAMAWA STATE

ABSTRACT This study discusses “Influence of Peer Group on Student Achievement”. The objective of the study is to find out the effect of peer group on the academic achievement of student. The research used the survey research method. The population of the study was derived from Federal Polytechnic, Mubi, of Adamawa State. Both primary and secondary data were used in collecting information and analyzed using simple percentage. The findings reveal that peer group is the first social group outside the home in which students gain acceptance and recognition, negative peer group affects student academic achievement, a well-disciplined student will find it difficult to be in a group that compromises delinquents, there is relationship between peer group and student achievement, peer group influence student academically, socially, morally and psychologically. The study therefore recommend that Parent should serve as role model and also be up and doing to their children because peer group is the first social group outside the home in which students gain acceptance and recognition so as to handle any pressure outside the home, Students should avoid any form of negative peer group because it will affects their academic achievement negatively, Students should be trained to be disciplined and as such a well-disciplined student will find it difficult to be in a group that compromises delinquents, Students should have good company because there is relationship between peer group and student achievement and Socialization should be observed strictly because it modify the behaviour of students.
