THE EFFECT OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF GUIERA SENEGALENSIS ON HAEMATOLOGICAL PARAMETERS OF CCL4 INDUCED WISTAR ALBINO RATS
Abstract
This study is to identify the phytochemical constituents of Guiera senegalensis leaf extract and its effects on hematological parameters. The extraction was carried out using cold maceration method. The results of the phytochemical screening indicated the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids and phenol. While the investigation of the effects of Guiera senegalensis leaf extract on hematological parameters revealed slight to good inhibition of CCl, in induced rats. shows that on induction of CCl, haemoglobin and PCV value reduced (12.7±0.46) (28.3±1.45) respectively when compared with that haemoglobin of normal control (14.7±0.34) and PCV of normal control (42.7±1.20) the decrease in haemoglobin and PCV value is not significance since the reduction is still within the range of normal value of haemoglobin and PCV, upon induction of Guiera senegalensis on induced CCla wistar albino rats the value of RBC (7.3 ± 0.23) and WBC (9.7±0.29) increased when compared to that RBC of normal control (6.8±0.02) and WBC of normal control (9.07 0.96), this shows that the induction of CCl, may leads to polycythemia in RBC and leukocytosis in WBC. On the administration of Guiera senegalensis at 150mg to the induced rats the CCl, was slightly inhibited which leads to slight increase in the value of the hematological parameters. On the administration of Guiera senegalensis at 200mg to the induced rats the hematological parameters was increased close to the normal control values which shows the effectiveness of the extract on the induced rat.
