THE ROLE OF GOVERNMENT POLICIES IN PROMOTING ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examined the impact of financial support, regulatory reforms,
infrastructure, and capacity-building initiatives on entrepreneurship development
in Nigeria, using a sample of 120 respondents. Data were analyzed using
descriptive statistics (mean and percentage) and regression analysis to determine
the significance of the variables affecting access to government support.
The regression results revealed that financial support (p = 0.0002) and regulatory
environment (p = 0.049) had statistically significant impacts on reducing
entrepreneurial challenges. However, infrastructure (p = 0.268) was not
statistically significant, despite being viewed by respondents as crucial.
Descriptive analysis showed that access to finance (mean = 4.21), simplified
regulatory processes (mean = 4.35), and capacity-building programs (mean =
4.48) were strongly supported by entrepreneurs. The findings underscore the
importance of targeted financial interventions, streamlined regulations, and
enhanced capacity development in fostering entrepreneurship in Nigeria.
However, the study also revealed ongoing challenges such as limited access to
practical training, bureaucratic bottlenecks, and insufficient infrastructure. It
concludes with key recommendations to strengthen financial systems, regulatory
frameworks, infrastructure development, and institutional support for sustainable
entrepreneurial growth.
