A SOCIO-STYLISTIC ANALYSIS OF SELECTED ONLINE VIDEO COMMERCIALS

Abstract

Socio-stylistics is a dimension to the study of the evaluation of language in relation to social factors and studies how language is analysed or expressed across levels of language use. The aim of this study was to examine selected online video commercials from a Socio-stylistic perspective. The data for this study constitute ten (10) online video commercials that are downloaded from YouTube. These data were analysed using the selected concepts of sociolinguistics and stylistics. The findings of this study revealed that the use of Pidgin English, code-mixing, code switching and borrowed languages was adopted in other to connect with audiences; both the educated and the uneducated. The conclusion of the study was that the way language is used in these commercials enables communication to a wide audience and as well revealed the linguistic diversity of the target audiences.
