IMPACT OF INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY ON HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT PRACTICE IN FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTRE (FMC) OWO

Abstract

The integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in healthcare has revolutionized Health Information Management (HIM) practices by enhancing efficiency, accuracy, and accessibility. This study aimed to assess the significance of ICT in HIM at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owo, identify challenges hindering its adoption, and propose strategies for effective implementation. The objectives were to evaluate the level of ICT integration, its impact on healthcare delivery, and perceptions of healthcare professionals regarding ICT tools in HIM. The study employed a descriptive survey design. Data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, health information officers, and ICT staff. A convenience sampling technique was used. Both quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, SPSS software, and thematic analysis for interviews. Validity and reliability were ensured through expert review and pilot testing. Findings revealed that although ICT tools such as Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS) are in use, full digitization is yet to be achieved. ICT was found to significantly improve record accuracy, service delivery, and interdepartmental communication. However, major challenges included poor internet connectivity (60%), power supply issues (52.5%), limited technical training (47.5%), and financial constraints (50%). The study concludes that while ICT enhances HIM practices at FMC Owo, its full potential is hindered by infrastructural and human capacity challenges. It recommends increased investment in ICT infrastructure, regular staff training, reliable power backup systems, strong cybersecurity protocols, and supportive government policies to facilitate digital transformation in healthcare.
