Abstract

STRACT This study assessed the relationship between instructional materials and method of teaching basic sciences on academic performance of students in junior secondary schools in Maiduguri metropolitan council, Borno State. The study has 4 objectives, 4 research questions and 1 hypothesis that guided the work. Cross sectional research design was used for the study. Multistage sampling procedure was used to select 100 respondents. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire and analysed using both descriptive (frequency, percentages, ranks and mean) and inferential statistics (Pearson Product Moment Correlation). The result showed that text books (68%), models (33%) and laboratory equipments (24%) were considered to be the instructional materials mostly used by teachers which were also ranked 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Majority (86%) of the students stated that the teachers use traditional/classroom teaching as a method of teaching, the PPMC result showed that there is a strong positive correlation (r=0.796, P=0.002) between instructional materials and method of teaching. The result on roles of government showed that showed that among the 6 statements provided to the respondents, they agreed to four statements and disagreed to 2 statements. The study concluded that there is a potential lack of access to diverse instructional materials in the sampled schools which may be attributed to insufficient provision of materials by the government and limited school budgets for resource acquisition. The study recommended that government should significantly increase budgetary allocations for the procurement of quality instructional materials for Basic Science education in junior secondary schools. This includes textbooks, laboratory equipment, digital resources, and other essential learning tools.
