DETERMINATION OF BONE MARROW RESPONSE IN FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL PLAYERS USING SOME HAEMATOLOGICAL PARAMETERS AS MARKERS

Abstract

Sports have an immense impact on a person’s daily life and health. Engaging in sports improves the heart function, controls blood sugar and lowers stress levels. Doping enhances performance of athletes during sports, increases stress on the heart and enhances oxygen carrying capacity in the blood. During exercise, the muscle works harder due to the fact the body uses more oxygen but produces more carbondioxide. To cope with this extra demand, ones breathing have to increase and this happen more in football players because they have more aerobic capacity than basketball players. This study was carried with a total of 76 subjects, of which 43 subjects were football players and 13 subjects were basketball players and the remaining 20 subjects were the control. Appropriate consent was obtained from the subjects and their blood samples were collected and analysed using the auto analyzer Erba H560 machine and data obtained were analysed using IBM SPSS and then compared using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results were expressed as mean ±SD. The difference were considered significant at P0.05. The result showed slight difference among the various groups on the Reticulocyte count (p=0.052) and also very slight difference on the red cell count (p=0.058). The PCV (p=0.207), Hb (p=0.263) showed no statistically significant difference among the groups. Similarly, the red cell indices; MCH (p=0.640), MCHC (p=0.522) and MCV (p=0.236) also showed no statistical difference among the various groups. In conclusion, there is no significant difference.
