Abstract

ABSTRACT Nosocomial infections, also known as healthcare-associated infections, are infections that occur in patients during the course of their treatment in healthcare facilities The aim of the study was to assess awareness and prevention of hospital acquired nosocomial infection among patients admitted at Madonna University Teaching Hospital, Elele Rivers State. The specific objectives were to assess the level of awareness of patients on nosocomial infection; to ascertain the prevention towards hospital acquired nosocomial infection among patients, and to identify the barriers faced by patients towards nosocomial infection prevention and control in Madonna University Teaching Hospital. A quantitative descriptive study was conducted and a random sampling was performed. A total of 130 patients were recruited in the study. The tool for data collection was a self-designed questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean, frequency and simple percentages. The results show that the majority of patients are aware that hospital-acquired infections can be transmitted by medical equipment such as syringes, needles, catheters, stethoscopes, thermometers, etc. (46.9% agreed and 29.2% strongly agreed). It is clear that participants had adequate awareness as the mean awareness scores were 83.21. The major barriers towards infection prevention and control measures were inadequate knowledge of the control measures (78.5%), followed by the lack of access to information (70.1%), then poor nurses’ attitude (68.7%), and finally, language and culture (45.8%). Based on the findings of the current study, it can be concluded that, , despite being aware of nosocomial infection and it preventions, patients face certain barriers which might hinder this prevention infections Furthermore, research about the barriers in infection prevention and control practices is recommended.
