DETERMINATION OF SOME HEAVY METALS CONCENTRATION IN SOIL SAMPLES FROM DUTSE EMIRATE, JIGAWA STATE USING ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROMETER (AAS)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study assessed heavy metal concentrations in soil samples from Dutse Emirate, Jigawa State,
using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) at the Multi-User Research Laboratory,
ABU Zaria. Four samples (H, I, J, K) were analyzed for Zn, Cu, Cd, Cr, Pb, Co, Mn, and Fe.
Cadmium (4.70–5.80 ppm) and Lead (71.10–90.40 ppm) exceeded WHO/FAO limits of 3.00
ppm and 50.00 ppm, indicating potential health risks such as kidney damage, miscarriage, and
reduced IQ in children. Cobalt levels in Samples J (68.70 ppm) and K (59.80 ppm) also
surpassed the 50 ppm limit, posing risks of lung and heart issues. Other metals, including Zn, Cu,
Cr, Mn, and Fe, were within safe limits, with Iron ranging from 873.7 to 1304.1 ppm far below
the 38,000 ppm threshold. Sample J had the highest contamination levels. The findings call for
better environmental monitoring and waste management to prevent soil degradation and human
exposure in the area.
