EVALUATION PROTEIN C LEVELS AMONG PREGNANT WOMEN ATTENDING RIVERS STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL
Abstract
Protein C which is natural anticoagulants is a vitamin K-dependent plasma glycoprotein zymogen that is synthesized in hepatocyte helps to prevent excessive clotting of blood in the body. This study evaluated the level of protein C among pregnant women. In this study, 45 apparently healthy subjects were used of which 35 subjects were pregnant while 10 subjects were not pregnant. The samples were collected and protein C levels were evaluated using ELISA method. The Data analysis was carried out using IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (IBM SPSS) version 29.0.1.0 (171).Windows 7. The results were expressed as mean ±SD. The comparison of the mean was done using independent sample t-test. Means and values were considered significant at p0.05. The results shows that the Mean±SD of protein C sample size for pregnant women was 1.08±0.19 (μg/ml) while that of non-pregnant women was 0.93±0.35 (μg/ml), though no statistically significant difference (p>0.05). In conclusion, there is no significant difference in the protein C level in pregnant women and non-pregnant women.
