AN EVALUATION OF PEER EDUCATION PROGRAMME IN CREATING YOUTH AWARENESS ON SEXUAL MATTERS. CASE STUDY OF GOMBE METROPOLIS

ABSTRACT This study evaluates the effectiveness of a peer education program in enhancing youth awareness of sexual health matters in Gombe Metropolis. Utilizing a quantitative research design, data were collected from 400 respondents through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques. Findings indicate that while 87.5% of respondents were aware of various sexual health and family planning methods, only 62.5% had utilized them. The demographic analysis revealed that 67.5% of respondents were below the age of 25, with a slightly higher representation of females (55%) than males (45%). The program was generally perceived as effective, with 70% of respondents affirming peer educators’ accessibility and knowledge. However, key challenges identified included inadequate training (40%) and limited session time (55%). The program positively influenced sexual health knowledge and behavior, with 70% of respondents reporting improved understanding and decision-making. Recommendations for improvement include increasing session frequency, enhancing peer educator training, providing better educational materials, and integrating modern technology into program delivery. The study concludes that while the peer education program effectively raises awareness and promotes responsible sexual behavior, targeted improvements are necessary to maximize its impact. These findings offer valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders to strengthen peer education initiatives in youth sexual health promotion.
