IMPACT OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC INEQUALITY ON LOW-INCOME FAMILIES AND SOCIAL MOBILITY IN GOMBE STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT Top of Form This study examines the impact of socio-economic inequality on low-income families and social mobility in Gombe State, Nigeria. Data were collected through a structured field survey, yielding 385 completed questionnaires from a diverse sample, which represents a high response rate of 96.25%. The analysis encompasses a broad range of socio-economic factors including age, gender, education, occupation, household income, and access to healthcare. Findings reveal that while a significant number of respondents possess at least a secondary education, many continue to face critical challenges such as limited access to quality healthcare and difficulties in securing stable employment. Notably, the study highlights that financial constraints and household dynamics play a pivotal role in shaping employment opportunities and overall household income. Furthermore, respondents perceive income inequality as a key contributor to social divisions within the community, affecting interpersonal relationships and overall social cohesion. The results underscore the complex interplay between economic factors and social mobility, emphasizing the need for targeted policy interventions to mitigate economic disparities. By illuminating the structural barriers that impede upward mobility, the study contributes valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders aiming to promote equitable socio-economic development in Gombe State.
