IMPACT OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES ON GAMBLING HABITS OF MALE STUDENTS IN DELTA STATE POLYTECHNIC
Abstract
The study is aimed at assessing impact of social networking sites on gambling
among students in Nigeria using Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku male students
as a case study. To achieve the objective of this study, the researcher adopted the
survey method as the research design and randomly sampled 370 respondents from
the population of 5000. The questionnaire was used as instrument to collect primary
data. The data collected were subjected to empirical analyses using tables and
simple percentages. Based on the data analyzed, the study found among other things
that students is very much aware of the online gambling craze within their peers. It
also found out that peer-to-peer influence plays a big role in the introduction and
subsequent use of devices that connect to the internet and thus usage of the online
gambling applications. The study thus recommended among others that there should
be creation of awareness on applications that are academic oriented so that the
students can utilize them whenever they are online such as evernote, google drive,
drop box, iBooks among others.
