INFLUENCE OF POOR MOTIVATION ON QUALITY OF PATIENT CARE RENDERED BY NURSES IN MADONNA UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL ELELE, RIVERS STATE
Abstract
The issue of poor motivation among healthcare workers, particularly nurses, has become a significant concern globally, affecting the quality of patient care provided in hospitals. The purpose of the study was to determine the influence of poor motivation on quality of patient care rendered by nurses in Madonna University Teaching Hospital Elele, Rivers State. To achieve the purpose of the study, three objectives and research questions were formulated. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The study population comprised of nurses working in Madonna University Teaching Hospital. Sample size of 80 was used for the study and distribution of questionnaire. Descriptive statistics of frequency distribution and percentage scores were used to analyze the data. From the findings, the mean and standard deviation of the respondents on the level of motivation among nurses in Madonna University Teaching Hospital was (M=3.23, SD±0.63). The respondent’s level of motivation among nurses is high motivation. From the findings, the mean and standard deviation of the respondents on causes and effects of poor motivation among nurses was (M=3.12, SD±0.31). The causes and effects were significant. These causes include poor remuneration, poor working environment, and poor hospital leadership style and supervision; while the effects include high level of job dissatisfaction, High rate of ‘private practice’, and Low retention rates in the hospital. Results revealed that the strategies to improve motivation among nurses are significant. These include provision of working gadgets, job/work redesign, improvement in employee reward system, clearer job description, and radiation burns. The study recommended that healthcare organizations should address the organizational factors such as nature of work environment, proper job scheduling, career development and training opportunities, and adequate remuneration and financial incentives.
