Abstract

The study investigated the effect of organic and inorganic fertilizers on the growth and yield of cowpea. Fertilizers used are the foliar, NPK, cowdung which are mixed two days prior to sowing the seeds. The experiment was completely randomized block design consisting of three blocks with four treatment including control, each treatment is replicated three times. Each block consisted of twelve (12) polythene pots, in each two seeds of cowpea were down. After germination in each pot one of the two seedlings were tagged for data collection at the interval of two weeks, parameters recorded include the plant height, number of leaves, number of branches and stem girth. The findings of the study shows that foliar fertilizer has the more effect on growth and seedling performance while cowdung has more effect on quality performance. It is therefore recommended that cowpea growers should adopt the use of foliar fertilizer or cowdung for better performance of the crop (cowpea) at stage with maximum probability of better yield resulting from the enhanced nutrient release by the foliar fertilizer.
