AN ASSESSMENT OF "ABIYE" SAFE MOTHERHOOD PROGRAMME IN ONDO STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
This study assessed the "Abiye" Safe Motherhood Programme in Ondo State, Nigeria, with a focus on its impact on maternal and neonatal health outcomes, public perception, implementation challenges, and sustainability factors. The programme, launched in 2009, aimed to reduce maternal mortality through a multi-pronged approach addressing delays in seeking, reaching, and receiving care. Using a descriptive survey research design, the study sampled 200 women in the prenatal and postnatal stages across Ondo State. A self-constructed and validated questionnaire was the primary instrument for data collection. Data analysis was conducted using frequency counts, percentages, and mean scores. The study was guided by four research questions and anchored in Systems Theory, which emphasizes the interdependence of subsystems—government policies, healthcare services, and community involvement—in determining programme success.
