EFFECT OF ETHANOL EXTRACT OF TETRACERA ALNIFOLIA ON TRIGLYCERIDES LEVEL IN STREPTOZOTOCIN INDUCED DIABETIC WISTAR RATS
Abstract
Tetracera alnifolia is a shrub commonly found in tropical forest regions and belongs to the Dilleniaceae family. It possesses phytochemicals that have hypoglycemic efects, essential for managing and treating diabetes. The research examined the impact of ethanol extract from tetracera alnifolia on blood glucose and triglyceride levels in streptozotocin-induced diabetic Wistar rats. Diabetes was triggered through intraperitoneal injection of 65 mg/Kg B.W. of streptozotocin (STZ), succeeded by treatment with diferent doses of 200, 500, and 800 mg/kg B.W of the plant extract,along with a standard antidiabetic medication (Glibenclamide 5mg/kg B.W), over aspan of thirty-five days, and fasting blood sugar (FBS) levels were checked weekly throughout the study duration. The findings indicated a decrease in FBS among therats given 200, 500, and 800mg/Kg B.W of the extract, while the diabetic control groupexhibited increased fasting blood sugar levels and the normal control group maintained stable and normal fasting blood sugar levels. Triglyceride levels were examined and compared across various experimental groups at the conclusion of the experimental period. The results showed no notable rise in triglyceride levels in the extract-treated groups when compared to the diabetic control and normal control .Potential explanations for the absence of a notable impact on triglycerides could be that the ethanol extract mainly influences glucose metabolism instead of lipidmetabolism. In conclusion, the ethanol extract from the root of Tetracera alnifoliacould provide a hopeful therapeutic method for lowering elevated blood glucose levels, thus assisting in diabetes treatment.
