ISOLATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF MULTI-DRUG RESISTANT STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS FROM VARIOUS COCKROACHES IN NIGER STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Antibiotic resistance in Staphylococcus aureus is progressively increasing globally and has become a global health concern. This study was carried out with aim to isolate and identify multi-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) from three Local Government Areas in Niger State. A total of 9 cockroaches were captured from three households in each local government area in Niger State. The isolation and identification of Staphylococcus aureus from the external surface and limbs surface were done by using standard microbiological methods. The antibiotic susceptibility profiles of the isolates were determined using disc diffusion method. Higher frequency of occurrence of Staphylococcus aureus was observed among the cockroaches from Chanchaga (35.3%; n=6/17) and Paiko (35.3%; n=6/17) as compared to those of Bosso (29.4%) having a significant difference (P
