Abstract
Abstract
This study investigates the influence of emotional intelligence on academic achievement among post basic education students in Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Kano State. The purpose of the study is to examine how students’ abilities in emotional awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills affect their academic performance. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised post basic education students in selected secondary schools within Kano Municipal LGA. A sample was drawn using appropriate sampling techniques, and data were collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure emotional intelligence components and academic achievement indicators.
The data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical tools to determine the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic performance. The findings revealed that emotional intelligence has a significant positive influence on students’ academic achievement. In particular, students with higher levels of emotional awareness, self-control, motivation, empathy, and interpersonal skills tend to perform better academically than those with lower emotional intelligence levels.
The study concludes that emotional intelligence is an important predictor of academic success among post basic education students. It recommends that teachers and school administrators should incorporate emotional intelligence development strategies into teaching and learning processes to enhance students’ academic performance. Guidance and counseling units in schools should also be strengthened to help students develop better emotional and social competencies.
