RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT IN MADONNA UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL ELELE, RIVERS STATE AND INVOLVEMENT OF NURSES

ABSTRACT
The main purpose of this study is the assessment of the involvement of nurses in research development in Madonna University Teaching Hospital, Elele, Rivers state. The specific objectives are to identify the difficulties nurses face in combining research with nursing care delivery in Madonna University teaching Hospital; to identify the factors that influence nurses involvement in research with professional practice in Madonna University teaching Hospital; and to analyze the attitude of nurses towards research development in Madonna University teaching Hospital. The study employed a quantitative descriptive survey design, using a semi-designed questionnaire as the instrument for eliciting data from the respondents. The data were descriptively summarized with the use of frequency, percentages and tables. From the findings, majority of the respondents outlined the difficulties nurses face in combining research with nursing care delivery to include shortage of research in some areas of nursing, lack of time and resources to undertake the type of research needed, inadequate skills and training of nurse researchers to conduct this type of research, cultural barriers in health organizations (70.9%); organization of nursing education, and nurses may not be appropriately trained in the skills of evidence-based practice. The attitude of nurses towards research development results revealed that the majority of the respondents agreed that research enhances development of nursing practice. The study concluded that nursing research must be the foundation of comprehensive, evidence-based clinical practice, and it is critical that nurses be exposed to, develop an appreciation for, and become more involved in nursing research, and thus incorporate its outcomes into the delivery of optimal professional nursing practice. It recommended that there is a need for building of supportive research environments and strengthening nurses’ research capacity for effective participation of nurses in health care policy decisions in low and middle income countries like Nigeria and global health priorities
