IMPACT OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY IN GEOGRAPHY ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN GOMBE METROPOLIS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the impact of digital technology tools on academic performance in Geography among secondary school students in Gombe Metropolis, Nigeria. The research explores the availability, usage, challenges, and optimization strategies for digital tools such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), interactive maps, and multimedia resources in teaching and learning Geography. A descriptive survey research design was employed, with data collected from 146 secondary school students and teachers using structured questionnaires. Chi-square and correlation analyses were conducted to determine the relationship between digital tool usage and students' academic performance. The findings reveal that schools with better access to digital tools demonstrated higher student engagement and improved academic performance, particularly in map interpretation and spatial analysis skills. However, limited ICT infrastructure, lack of teacher training, poor electricity supply, and inadequate funding were identified as major challenges affecting the effective implementation of digital technology in Geography education.
