NEWSPAPER COVERAGE OF SUICIDE RATE IN NIGERIA AND ITS REASONS (A STUDY OF VANGUARD, HERALD AND PUNCH NEWSPAPER)
Abstract
This study examines the newspaper coverage of suicide rates and the reasons for suicide in Nigeria, specifically focusing on three major newspapers: Punch, Herald, and Vanguard. Suicide, a sensitive and complex issue, is often reported by the media with varying degrees of sensitivity and attention to ethical standards. The primary objective of this research is to explore how these newspapers report on suicide, the framing of suicide-related issues, and the underlying reasons for suicide as presented in the media. Using content analysis, the study analyzes articles published between January 2023 to December 2023 to assess how these newspapers depict the causes and rates of suicide, their ethical approaches to reporting, and the possible impact of such coverage on public perception. The research methodology adopts quantitative analyses of the articles from the selected newspapers. The study identifies patterns in the language used in the reporting, the framing of suicide as a societal issue, and the extent to which mental health and socio-economic factors are highlighted. A significant part of the research also explores the ethical guidelines followed in suicide reporting, particularly regarding sensationalism and the potential for suicide contagion. The findings reveal that while the newspapers generally adhere to ethical standards, they sometimes engage in sensational reporting that could potentially influence public perception and increase the stigma surrounding mental health issues. This study also finds that the reasons for suicide in the Nigerian context are often framed around socio-economic struggles, mental health issues, and relationship problems, with less focus on systemic factors like government policy and societal pressures. In the context of mental health, the research highlights the need for a more nuanced approach to reporting suicide, emphasizing prevention, support systems, and the importance of addressing the root causes of mental health challenges. The study concludes that media plays a crucial role in shaping public understanding of suicide, and that more responsible and empathetic coverage could contribute to suicide prevention efforts and reduce the stigma associated with mental health in Nigeria. This research provides valuable insights into the role of the media in suicide reporting, offering recommendations for journalists and media outlets on how to cover suicide more ethically and effectively. The study calls for the implementation of stricter ethical guidelines and training for journalists, as well as a broader public health initiative to raise awareness about mental health issues. The findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on the relationship between media coverage and public perception of suicide in Nigeria and provide a foundation for further research into the impact of media on public health issues.
