PREVALENCE OF BREAST CANCER BY AGE AND HISTOLOGICAL TUMOR CHARACTERISTICS IN AMINU KANO TEACHING HOSPITAL CANCER REGISTRY
Abstract
Breast cancer remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among women worldwide, with varying prevalence across different populations. This study examines the prevalence of breast cancer in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital Cancer Registry from 2022 to 2024, focusing on age distribution and histological tumor characteristics. A retrospective review of cancer registry records was conducted, analyzing the frequency of breast cancer cases across different age groups and histological subtypes. The results indicate that women aged 41–50 years are the most affected, with invasive carcinoma being the predominant histological type. The study also highlights a 21.2% decline in cases in 2024 compared to 2023, which may be attributed to improved screening programs or external factors requiring further investigation. The findings underscore the need for targeted awareness campaigns, early detection strategies, and improved healthcare access to reduce breast cancer burden in Nigeria.
