ABSTRACT
The integration of Information Technology (IT) into education has transformed the way
subjects are taught and learned, particularly in the sciences. This study explores the impact of
using Information Technology in teaching biology in selected secondary schools within Kano
Municipal Local Government, emphasizing its influence on teaching effectiveness, student
engagement, and learning outcomes. The research adopts a descriptive survey design,
focusing on six secondary. A structured questionnaire was utilized as the primary instrument
for data collection, targeting biology teachers. The study investigates four core areas: the
frequency of IT usage, the effectiveness of IT in enhancing teaching and learning, the
availability and adequacy of IT resources, and the challenges that hinder IT integration in
biology education. The findings reveal that IT significantly improves the teaching and
learning of biology by making complex concepts more accessible and engaging. Teachers
noted that IT tools such as virtual simulations, multimedia resources, and online collaborative
platforms simplify complex biological topics, enhance student retention, and foster active
participation in lessons. However, the study also highlights persistent challenges, including
inadequate IT facilities, unreliable electricity, limited technical support, and insufficient
training for teachers, which restrict the optimal use of IT in classrooms. Based on these
findings, the study concludes that while IT holds immense potential for revolutionizing biology
education, addressing infrastructural and training gaps is critical for its success.
Recommendations include increased government investment in IT infrastructure, regular
training for teachers, and the formulation of clear policies to guide IT integration in schools.
This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on educational reform by demonstrating
the transformative role of IT in biology education and offering actionable insights for
stakeholders to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.
