A STUDY ON THE INCIDENCE OF ECTOPARASITES ON AFRICAN CATFISH (CLARIAS GARIEPINUS) IN CHALLAWA GORGE RESERVOIR, KARAYE LOCAL GOVERNMENT, KANO STATE
Abstract
The incidence of ectoparasites on African catfish in aquaculture settings is a critical concern for fish health and production. This study aimed to observe and identified the incidence of ectoparasites on African catfish (clarias gareipinus) by collecting 30 fish samples from Challawa gorge reservoir. Through detailed observation and identification methods, it was determined that no ectoparasites were found on the sampled African catfish. While the absence of ectoparasites in this study is a promising finding, it also sheds light on the importance of effective management practices in maintaining the health and biosecurity of aquaculture operations. Factors such as water quality, stocking density, and farm hygiene could have contributed to the lack of ectoparasites in the examined fish populations. This study underscores the significance of regular monitoring, proper farm management, and biosecurity measures in preventing ectoparasitic infestations in African catfish aquaculture. Further research is warranted to explore potential reasons for the absence of ectoparasites in this particular study and to develop sustainable strategies for ectoparasite control in aquaculture systems.
