Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common non communicable diseases around the world and is responsible for many deaths resulting from some of its serious complications,Internal diabetes federation (IDF) define diabetes as a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose which over time leads to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels ,eyes, kidneys and nerves.the present studies investigate the Ameliorative effect of senna occidentalis and artemisia annua on the hippocampus following alloxan induced diabetes in wistar rat.Twenty wistar rats were grouped into five, each group contain four rats. Group I, was served as control they were administered normal feed and distilled water. Group Il,was served as negative control and were administered with 150mg/kg of body alloxan .Group 111,was administered with 150mg/kg of body alloxan and 200mg/kg of body senna occidentalis.group 1v were administered with 200mmg/kg of body alloxan and 200mg/kg of body artemisia and group V which served as the diabetic control were treated with senna and artemisia for a period of 14 days respectively. Result revealed that Diabetes negatively affect morphological integrity of the hippocampus and reduce hippocampal neurogenesis in the treated groups. T maze test result showed that there was a decreased in meantime taken for the animal to complete T maze test though the decrease was not statistically significant. Conclusively, Diabetes caused behavioral changes in the hippocampus and reduces the meantime taken for the rats to complete the T maze test memorv assessment.
