CONTEMPORARY NIGERIAN PLAYWRIGHTS AND THE SEARCH FOR TRUE LEADERSHIP: A CASE STUDY OF ALEX ASIGBO'S THE REIGN OF PASCAL AMUSU AND EMEKA NWABUEZE'S A PARLIAMENT OF VULTURES

Abstract The concept of playwriting today has gone beyond the understanding of the term as an act of sharing the pains, worries and flights of members of a green society through drama. Its deep reflection and critique of these societal follies have become a way of aiding the society to grow despite the fact that our country Nigeria is blessed with enough human, material and natural resources, these resources have been grossly mismanaged or fatted away overtime by her leaders who have refused to use above bound. The aim of the research is to portray the efforts of our dramatists in exposing the machinations of our leaders in their quest to retain power and acquire un ending wealth to the detriment of the masses. The story also aims to understand how Nigerian playwrights reflect societal issues and advocate for true leadership the research adapted the qualitative methodology and a context analysis approach of two drama texts of Alex Asigbo's. "The Reign of Pachal Amusu and Emeka Nwabueze's Parliament of Vulture's. Through detailed analysisoftheseplaywrightshavecritiquedexistingpoliticalsystemsandenvisionedidealsforms of government. Ultimately, thus research will contribute to a deeper understanding of the role of theatre and drama in shaping and reflecting political ideologies andaspirations.
