FISCAL POLICY AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA
Abstract
Fiscal policy plays a crucial role in shaping economic development and improving the welfare of citizens. In Nigeria, government fiscal decisions regarding taxation, public expenditure, and budget allocation significantly influence the level of human development. This study examines the impact of fiscal policy on human development in Nigeria, with particular attention to sectors such as education, healthcare, and social welfare that directly affect the quality of life of citizens.
The research evaluates how government spending patterns and revenue generation mechanisms contribute to improvements in human development indicators such as life expectancy, literacy rate, and income levels. It also assesses the effectiveness of fiscal policy in addressing poverty, unemployment, and inequality in the country. Despite increased government expenditure over the years, challenges such as inefficient resource allocation, corruption, and poor fiscal management have limited the expected improvements in human development outcomes.
The findings suggest that well-structured fiscal policies, particularly those that prioritize investment in human capital development, can significantly enhance human development in Nigeria. The study recommends increased transparency in public spending, improved fiscal discipline, and greater investment in education and healthcare sectors. Strengthening fiscal policy frameworks will help ensure that government resources are effectively utilized to promote sustainable human development and improve the overall well-being of the Nigerian population.
