DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A HYBRID POWER GENERATION SYSTEM USING SOLAR AND A MINI HYDRO POWER PLANT
Abstract
This project investigates the feasibility and performance of a scalable hybrid power generation system specifically designed for residential applications in Nigeria, addressing the country's need for reliable and affordable electricity. The system combines solar photovoltaic (PV) panels with a mini-hydro turbine powered by water pumped from an underground source to an elevated storage tank. By harnessing solar energy and utilizing pumped hydro storage, the system leverages two abundant renewable resources in Nigeria. This approach offers several advantages, including increased energy independence, enhanced reliability during grid outages or periods of low sunlight, and reduced electricity costs through decreased reliance on the national grid. The project utilizes HOMER Pro software for system design, simulation, and optimization, considering the energy demands of a typical Nigerian household. The results demonstrate the system's ability to provide 100% renewable electricity and achieve significant cost savings compared to grid power. By creating a practical model for homeowners, this research aims to contribute to a more sustainable and energized future for Nigeria.
