EVALUATION OF THE MICROBIAL PROFILE OF SOIL POLLUTED WITH CASSAVA MILL EFFLUENT
Abstract
The microbial profile of soil polluted with cassava effluent was studied using standard analytical methods. Soil samples were collected from the surface of the soil impacted with cassava effluent (Sample A), sample the impacted soil (Sample B) and from 10m adjacent sites that were not impacted with the effluent pollution (Control sample). The isolation and enumeration of microbial population was carried out using standard culture-based methods. The bacterial count of 3.06×107 CFU/g was recorded for polluted, while the lowest count of 1.99×107 cfu/g was recorded in (Sample B) while highest bacterial count of 8.6×106 cfu/g was recorded in the control sample. The highest fungal count of 1.9 ×106 cfu/g was recorded from soil contaminated with cassava effluent (Sample A). The bacteria isolated were Pseudomonas sp., Klebsiella sp., Staphylococcus sp., Bacillus sp., and Acinetobacter sp. Four species of fungi belonging to the genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, Mucor and Rhizopus were also isolated.
