Abstract

Background: Ergonomics risk factors are anything in the work environment that can increase the risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders. Bricklaying is a physically demanding profession that require worker to move and lift heavy objects and to perform repetitive movements. These physical demand can put someone at risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders. Musculoskeletal disorders are injury or disorder to bone, muscle, tendon and ligaments. Objectives: To find out the relationship between ergonomic risk factors and pattern of work related musculoskeletal disorders among bricklayers in Kano. Methods: A cross sectional survey was conducted among bricklayers in Kano using convenient sampling technique. Work related musculoskeletal disorders questionnaire (WMSDsQ) was used to assess the risk factors associated with work related musculoskeletal disorders. Descriptive statistics of frequencies and percentages, spearman rank order correlation were used to check the relationship between variables using the SPSS version 22. Result: All the participants were male, most of them are within 18-25(40%) age range, most of them have working experience of more than 10 years, elbow was the most reported of pain in the body, result from the study indicated that there is positive correlation between ergonomics risk factors and each of age (r=0.036, p=0.806), years of working experience (r=0.121, p=0.401) and pattern (neck, shoulder, elbow, waist/hip, hip/thigh, ankles/feet) this means as age, years of working experience and pattern (neck, shoulder, elbow, waist/hip, hip/thigh, ankles/feet) increases the risk increases though the correlation is weak. While negative correlation between ergonomics risk factors and pattern (dorsal region, lumber region and knees) though the correlation is weak. Conclusion: The study show the correlations between ergonomics risk factors and each of age, pattern of musculoskeletal disorders and years of working experience.
