DESIGN OF 3-STOREY RESIDENTIAL BUILDING AND RECTANGULAR COMBINED FOOTING IN ACCORDANCE TO BS 8110
Abstract
The escalating demand for multi-storey residential buildings in Nigeria, coupled
with frequent structural failures, necessitates robust design solutions. This study
presents the completed design of a three-storey residential building and
rectangular combined footing in accordance to BS 8110, optimizing slabs, beams,
columns, foundations and stairs for safety, and sustainability. Guided by BS
8110-1:1997’s Limit State Method, the design addresses ultimate strength and
serviceability, adapting to Nigeria’s humid climate, variable soils, and
construction practices. A mixed-method approach quantitative structural
calculations and qualitative case studies of collapses, emphasized column design
for enhanced load-bearing capacity and stability. All elements were designed,
with checks for bending, shear, and deflection) satisfying BS 8110 standards.
Local adaptations, including 20 mm concrete cover and simplified reinforcement,
ensured practicality. Comparative analysis confirmed the design’s efficiency and
safety, minimizing collapse risks. The outcome is a cost-effective building model,
offering a replicable framework to improve Nigeria’s housing sector and reduce
structural failures.
