PREVALENCE OF CERVICAL CANCER IN FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTER UMUAHIA, ABIA STATE FROM 2019-2023
Abstract
This study examines the prevalence of cervical cancer among women who attended cervical cancer screenings at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Umuahia from 2019 to 2023. A total of 292 women were screened during this period, with 31 testing positive for cervical cancer, resulting in an overall prevalence rate of 10.62%. Yearly prevalence rates fluctuated, with the highest recorded in 2019 and 2022 at 25.81%, and the lowest in 2021 at 9.68%. These variations highlight the impact of awareness, healthcare access, and screening practices on detection rates. The findings underscore the critical need for continuous education on cervical health and the importance of regular screening to improve early detection and reduce the incidence of cervical cancer in the region. Enhanced public health initiatives and targeted interventions are essential to address the ongoing challenges and promote better health outcomes for women in Umuahia.
